Shriner’s pork barbecue is back

By Jeff Helsdon

The Shriner’s 64th annual pork barbecue will be held on Friday, Sept. 6, and is being touted as the Best BBQ Ever.

The annual event was initially put on hold due to COVID, and then efforts to hold it last year were sidelined by scheduling issues. Now, the event is back, and organizers hope it will be bigger and better.

New this year will be musical entertainment by Blurr Rodeo and Elle Declark and a silent auction. The event will have a 50/50 draw and the pork barbecue with corn on the cob and cucumber salad. It’s expected there will be 800 to 1,000 people in attendance.

“It’s the social event of the year,” said Shriner and sauce master John Danbrook.

He is in charge of making the barbecue sauce, the recipe for which he calls a “coveted secret”. This is no small task as 45 gallons of the secret mix is needed to feed this many people.

It should be noted this is a licensed event, for people 19 and older. It is no longer a stag event. All proceeds to go the Shriner’s Kid’s Hospital in Montreal.

The hours are 5 – 11 p.m., but those looking for food are asked to be there by 9 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.tillsonburgshrineclub.com or at the door for $25 per person. Sales at the door are cash only.

Anyone looking to donate silent auction items can reach out to Danbrook at 519-842-5137.
