The Stratford District Secondary School (SDSS) girls curling team capped off another successful season by qualifying for their second consecutive provincial championship, held recently in Sarnia.
The tournament kicked off Wednesday, March 19 with the SDSS rink earning a dominant 19-2 victory over Bishop Allen Academy from Toronto.
On Thursday, the team faced two tough matches. In the morning, they were narrowly edged out by Frontenac Secondary School from Kingston, 5-4. Later that day, they lost 6-2 to St. Ignatius High School from Thunder Bay.
Bouncing back on Friday, the Stratford team defeated St. Francis Xavier Secondary School from Mississauga in a decisive 13-2 win.
“This landed the SDSS team in third place in their pool and out of the playoffs, since only the top two in each pool moved on,” coach Shane Restall said.
Frontenac went on to finish fourth overall, while St. Ignatius claimed gold, confirming the strength of the competition in SDSS’s pool. With a few more breaks, Restall said “they could’ve made the podium.”
Despite falling short of the playoffs, the team returned home proud of what they had accomplished on the ice this season.
