A young Perth County Beef Club 4-H member was excited to be near the top of her class at the recent beef show at the Stratford Fall Fair.
Payton Stever who lives on her family‘s farm near Topping, north of Stratford, is a Grade 9 student at Stratford District Secondary School and had shown both a beef steer and beef heifer in the Perth County 4-H Beef Club this year.
Her show-winning steer was named Bentley and this was only the second year for Stever to be showing a market steer in the 4-H beef club program.
In recent communication with Stever, she said Bentley is from their own genetic program at their farm in Topping, in Perth East, and he is of Simmental breeding.
She bought him from her parents, Shane and Ila Stever, and recently sold him at the Brussels livestock show and sale on Oct. 12.
Payton Stever’s prize steer was also a winner at the Mitchell, Fergus and Erin fall fairs, and just recently won the heavyweight division at the Brussels beef show ahead of the sale.
She said her market steer weighed approximately 1,450 pounds and was happy to report that the Wild Hog Country Market, east of Stratford, owned by Marvin, Wendy, Derik and Kaitlynn Bachert, were the proud buyers at $4.50 a pound.
The enthusiastic young 13-year-old’s next stop is the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, where she will compete with her 4-H beef heifer in what will be her toughest show of the year yet, but is very much looking forward to the challenge.
