St. Marys hosts official lamp-lighting for renovated Grand Trunk Trail

By Wendy Lamond
It was a beautiful night and a great turnout on the Grand Trunk Trail for lighting of the lights on May 1.
Mayor Al Strathdee welcomed the crowd and thanked the donors and volunteers that helped with the trail-renovation project, which included paving and lighting the trail from Wellington Street North east past James Street North.
St. Marys corporate communications manager Brett O’Reilly led a count down and Strathdee flipped the switch, lighting the way for a safer and more accessible trail.
The improvements to the trail included 23 new light standards and 700 metres of paving.
Town employees and members of council were on hand to thank the Lind Family Foundation, the Kinsmen Club of St. Marys, Texo Terra Contracting, Forman Electric and Bill Richardson. The town also thanked the anonymous donors that helped to complete the project.
After the switch was thrown, the spectators were able to stay and enjoy some refreshments on the trail courtesy of the town and to enjoy the beautiful sunset from the bridge.
